I like that you left it open ended. It fit very well for the story and made the soulless machine even more mysterious and evil. I hope you will be able to write more soon. Keep up the great work!
Really thought provoking story. Cool steampunk/pulp sci-fi vibe too. I enjoyed it! Why are the clockwork overlords are only invading certain places? Is that because some towns are more likely to "conform" than others? That was my guess while reading. I love awesome sci-fi like this that gives us a 'what if' glimpse into the future. Nicely done! Thank you. PS I found your story through the Iron Age prompts.
For these short stories, I usually like to leave things a bit open-ended. Maybe the Clockwork Corps goes for the more easily bent populations, like you speculated. Or maybe they have some other, unknowable reason for being picky, only conquering specific regions that are suitable to add to the grander design of their network of machines. Who can tell what goes on in the inscrutable mind of a soulless machine, after all?
I too like the kinds of stories that give us a “ok, let’s not go down *that* path” kind of vibe. I’m happy to see the feeling I was trying to impart came across to you.
Some personal troubles got in the way of me dabbling with writing, but hopefully I’ll be able to come back to it soon. I hope in the future I can create some other stories you’ll enjoy!
